Why AI visibility is its own thing

More and more people don't scroll a list of links anymore — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI for an answer and take what it gives them. Those engines don't rank pages the way classic search does; they read pages, understand them, and synthesize a single response. If an engine can't read or understand your site, you simply aren't in the conversation.

What the check looks at

  • Readability: can an AI crawler actually read your homepage, or does it see a blank JavaScript shell?
  • Structured data: do you have the schema that tells engines who you are, what you do, and where?
  • Legibility: is there clear, question-and-answer content phrased the way people ask AIs?
  • Crawler posture: are you allowing the answer-engine bots (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) that let engines see you?

How to read your grade

The grade is directional, not a guarantee — AI answers vary run to run, and no honest tool can promise an engine will recommend you. What a good grade does mean is that AI can see and understand your business, which is the part you can actually control. Fix the readability and structure gaps first; they're the ones holding you back the most.

Common questions

What is an AI visibility check?

It scans your website the way an AI answer engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI answers) would and grades how legible your business is to them: whether an AI crawler can read your pages at all, whether you have the structured data that describes your business, whether your content is phrased the way people ask AIs, and whether you're allowing the answer-engine crawlers. You get a grade from S down to F, with plain-English findings. S is reserved for a perfect 100 — almost nothing scores it.

Why can't AI read my website?

The most common reason is rendering: many modern sites build their content with JavaScript, but AI crawlers mostly don't run JavaScript — so they fetch a nearly blank page and see almost nothing. Missing structured data (schema) and blocked crawlers are the other big causes. The report tells you which of these is affecting you.

Will this make ChatGPT recommend my business?

No — and be wary of anyone who promises that. What we can do is make sure AI can see and understand your business: a readable, crawlable page, structured data that describes who you are and what you do, and content phrased the way people ask. Whether an engine then cites you is influence, not something anyone can guarantee. We're honest about that line.

What's the difference between this and normal SEO?

Traditional SEO is about ranking in a list of blue links. Answer engines don't return a list — they read pages, understand them, and synthesize a single answer. So the game shifts from keywords and backlinks to being machine-readable and clearly understood. This report grades that answer-engine legibility specifically.

Can Squish just fix what it finds?

Some of it, automatically. On a WordPress site we host — a Squish web hosting plan, or a site built with Squish Faber — we generate and apply three of the fixes for you: the structured data that describes your business, a meta description, and a question-and-answer block. You review each change before it goes live, and we take a restore point first, so anything can be rolled back. Anything else the report flags is different in kind: getting a JavaScript-built site to render for crawlers, or opening your robots.txt to the answer-engine crawlers, are changes at the hosting layer rather than content, so we do those as hosting work rather than at the click of a button. None of it is locked to us, though — every finding is a change to your own site, so you or whoever builds it can make them, and this check is free to run again once you have. On the ongoing plan we re-scan monthly, so you can see whether the grade moved.

These gaps are fixable. Squish adds the structured data that describes your business, a meta description, and a question-and-answer block for you — on WordPress sites we host, whether that's a Squish web hosting plan or a site built with Squish Faber. You review every change before it goes live, and we take a restore point first.
