Down for everyone, or just you?

When a site won't load, the cause is on one of three legs: your side (DNS cache, VPN, network), the path (ISP or CDN trouble), or their side (the server itself). This check takes your side out of the equation — we request the site over HTTPS and HTTP from our own servers and show you exactly what answered, with the status code and response time. If we get an answer and you don't, start local; if we don't either, it's really down.

Common questions

It's up here but down for me — why?

If our servers can reach the site and you can't, the problem is almost always local: your DNS cache (try flushing it), a VPN or corporate network filter, your ISP, or a stale browser cache. Try another network — phone hotspot is the quickest test.

What do the status codes mean?

2xx means the server answered normally. 3xx means it redirected us (normal for sites that redirect to www or HTTPS). 4xx means it's up but refused the request. 5xx means it's reachable but something behind it is failing — the server is up, the application isn't.

Is this a full uptime monitor?

No — it's a single live check from one vantage point, right now. Real monitoring checks continuously from outside and alerts you before customers notice. Squish-hosted sites include that automatically, with checks every 2 minutes.

Finding out from customers is the expensive way. Squish hosting includes uptime monitoring out of the box — every site checked every 2 minutes, with a real engineer on the pager when something breaks.
