Why your certificate matters

An SSL/TLS certificate is what turns http:// into the padlock https:// — it encrypts traffic and proves your site is who it says it is. An expired or misconfigured cert throws a full-screen browser warning that sends visitors running. This checks that yours is valid, trusted, and not about to lapse.

Common questions

What does this check?

It connects to your site over HTTPS (port 443) and reads the certificate it presents — who issued it, what names it covers, when it expires, and whether the chain validates. It's the fastest way to confirm your SSL is live and not about to lapse.

My cert is 'valid' but expires soon — should I worry?

If you're on managed hosting with auto-renewing certificates (like Squish), no — it renews automatically before expiry. If you manage your own cert, anything under ~3 weeks is worth acting on; an expired cert throws browser security warnings that scare customers away.

What does 'Invalid' mean?

The certificate exists but the chain didn't validate — common causes are an expired cert, a self-signed cert, a name mismatch (the cert doesn't cover the domain you entered), or a missing intermediate certificate. The status line names the specific reason.

Never think about cert renewals again. Squish hosting includes auto-renewing SSL on every site — no expiry scares, no manual renewals.
