What WHOIS tells you
Every registered domain has a public registration record: which registrar manages it, when it was registered and when it expires, its status locks, and its nameservers. It's how you check whether a domain is taken, when it's up for renewal, or where it's currently hosted.
Common questions
Why is the registrant hidden?
Since GDPR, registries redact personal registrant details (name, email, address) from public records by default. You'll see the registrar, dates, status, and nameservers — but the owner's contact info is masked unless they've opted out of privacy.
What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
RDAP is the modern, structured (JSON) replacement for the old free-text WHOIS protocol. This tool uses RDAP under the hood, so the data is cleaner and more reliable — but it's the same registration information you'd expect from a WHOIS lookup.
How do I read the domain status codes?
Statuses like clientTransferProhibited or clientHold are registrar locks that protect a domain (e.g. preventing unauthorized transfers). pendingDelete or redemptionPeriod mean a domain has expired and is heading toward release.
Registering or transferring a domain? Squish includes WHOIS privacy at no cost on every domain, with no renewal price hikes.
