Microsoft 365 vs. Google Workspace for a Mid-Size Team: An Honest Comparison
Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace? Both are good. Here is an honest, jargon-free look at which one actually fits a growing mid-size team, and why.
If you are setting up email and tools for a growing team, you will hit the same fork almost everyone does: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Here is the honest version, because both are genuinely good and the right answer depends on how your team actually works.
Where Google Workspace shines
Google is simple, fast, and built for real-time collaboration. If your team lives in the browser, loves several people editing the same document at once, and does not need heavyweight spreadsheets, Google Workspace feels effortless. It is a fantastic fit for newer, lean, cloud-native teams.
Where Microsoft 365 pulls ahead
Microsoft 365 goes deeper. You get the real, installed Office apps (the Excel power users actually need, not a lighter web version), Teams for calls and chat, and, at the higher tiers, serious security and device controls that growing and regulated companies care about. If your team runs on Outlook and Excel, or you are the kind of business that will eventually need to lock things down properly, Microsoft is usually the more comfortable long-term home.
The honest tiebreaker
- Small, collaborative, document-light, browser-native? Google Workspace is a great pick.
- Established, Office-heavy, security-conscious, or heading toward compliance needs? Microsoft 365 tends to win.
There is no wrong answer here, only a better fit. Anyone who tells you one is universally superior is selling something.
Where we come in
We will be honest about our own lane: Squish sets up and manages Microsoft 365, because for the mid-size businesses we work with, it is usually the better long-term fit. Same license price as buying it straight from Microsoft, except we handle the setup, the security records, and the support.
And if you are on Google Workspace today and decide Microsoft is where you want to be, we migrate you over for free, without losing a single email. If you are happily on Google and want to stay there, we will tell you that too. We would rather give you a straight answer than a sales pitch.
Not sure which way to go? Ask Faber or talk to a human. We will help you think it through, even if the honest answer is "stay where you are."
