Owning Your Domain: The Honest Guide to Getting One Without Getting Nickel-and-Dimed

A plain-English guide to registering and actually owning your domain: what should be included, what gets upsold, how DNS and renewals work, and how to never get locked in.

Your domain is your address on the internet. It is the name people type to find you, the thing your email lives on, the first impression before anyone reads a single word. It is also one of the cheapest important things your business will ever own, and one of the most quietly mishandled. So here is the honest, plain-English guide to getting one and actually owning it.

What a domain actually is

A domain is just your name on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. You do not buy it once and keep it forever, the way most people assume. You register it, which is closer to renting: you hold the exclusive rights to that name for a year or more at a time, and as long as you keep it registered, it is yours and nobody else can take it. Simple as that.

The company you register it through is called a registrar. That is who sends you the renewal notices, and, if you are not paying attention, who quietly turns those notices into a moving target.

Registering one, and the fine print nobody points out

Picking the name is the fun part. Two things are worth knowing before you hand over a card:

  • The ending matters less than you think. A .com is still the gold standard for a business, but .co, .io, and industry-specific endings are all perfectly good. Pick what reads clean and is easy to say out loud.
  • The first-year price is bait. Be wary of the "99 cents" and "5 dollar" deals. That is a one-year promo, and the renewal often lands at three or four times as much. The sticker price is not the real price. (We wrote a whole honest breakdown of that trick if you want the details.)

The stuff that should be included, but usually is not

Here is where the big registrars, GoDaddy and Namecheap very much included, really get you. A handful of things that ought to come standard get carved off and sold back to you as "add-ons":

  • WHOIS privacy. When you register a domain, your name, address, phone, and email go into a public directory by default. Privacy protection hides them. This should simply be free. It is your personal information. Squish includes it, always, no upsell.
  • Secure DNS. The behind-the-scenes system that points your domain at your website and email. Good, fast, protected DNS should be part of the deal, not a premium tier.
  • A transfer lock. A simple switch that stops someone from sneakily moving your domain to another registrar without your say-so. Basic security. On by default with us.

If a company charges you extra for your own privacy and basic security, that tells you how they see you.

DNS, in one short paragraph

Sooner or later you will hear "it is a DNS thing" said in a tone that suggests you would not understand it. So here it is: DNS is the internet's phone book. It takes yourbusiness.com and points it at the actual computers running your website and your email. When DNS is set up right, everything just works. When it is not, your site or email quietly breaks. The good news is you should almost never have to think about it. With Squish you can ask our assistant to check or change your DNS in plain English, or hand it to a human, whichever you prefer.

Renewals, and not getting gouged

Because a domain renews every year, it is the perfect thing to quietly overcharge for. The classic move: hook you with a cheap first year, then let the price drift upward, betting you will not bother to move. Our approach is boring and honest here: the renewal price is the price. No intro-rate games, no mystery increases.

Owning it means being able to leave

This is the big one. A domain you cannot easily move is not really yours, it is rented from someone holding the door shut. A fair registrar makes leaving simple: unlock it, grab a transfer code, done. We keep the transfer lock on for your security, but the moment you want to go, we help you out the door with a smile. No hostage situation, no cancellation maze. The freedom to leave is exactly what keeps us honest enough that you will want to stay.

How Squish does domains

To put it plainly: you register your name, and the things that should be included actually are. Privacy, secure DNS, transfer-lock protection, and honest renewal pricing, all standard. Manage it yourself through our assistant if you like driving, or hand it to a real human if you would rather not. Your name, your terms.

The bottom line

Your domain is one of the most important things your business owns online, and owning it should feel like owning it: registered in your name, your private details kept private, a fair price that does not lurch around every year, and the freedom to leave whenever you want. That is not some premium experience. It is just how it should have worked all along.
