How to Switch Web Hosts Without Taking Your Site Down
Afraid moving web hosts will crash your website? Here is how a proper, zero-downtime migration actually works, step by step, and why it is safer than staying stuck.
The number one reason people stay stuck with a host they have outgrown or stopped trusting is a single fear: if I move, my site will break. It is a reasonable worry, and it is also mostly avoidable. Here is how a clean migration actually works.
The fear, and where it comes from
Most people picture "switching hosts" as flipping a switch: old site off, new site on, fingers crossed. Done that way, sure, there would be a scary gap. But that is not how a careful move works.
How a zero-downtime migration really goes
The trick is that your old site keeps running the whole time the new one is being set up. Roughly:
- Copy everything to the new host: files, database, settings. The old site never goes offline.
- Test the copy privately on the new host, before any visitor sees it, to confirm it works exactly right.
- Lower one DNS setting (the "TTL") ahead of time so the final switch takes effect fast.
- Flip the pointer so visitors quietly start landing on the new host. Because both are live during the handoff, nobody sees a gap.
- Watch it settle and keep the old one around briefly as a safety net.
Done properly, your visitors never notice a thing. No error page, no "under construction," no lost email.
The catch: it takes know-how
Every step above is simple in theory and easy to fumble in practice. One wrong record, one skipped test, and you get exactly the downtime you were afraid of. Which is why "we will migrate you for free" is only reassuring if the people doing it actually know what they are doing.
How we handle it
At Squish, migration is included, free, and done by our team, not handed to you as a scary checklist. We copy, we test, we flip when it is genuinely ready, and we stay with it until your site and email are humming on the new setup. The whole point is that moving to us should feel like nothing happened, except now your site is faster and your bill makes sense.
A host that makes leaving feel dangerous is counting on that fear. We would rather earn you by making the move painless.
Thinking about it? Ask Faber or hit the chat, and we will tell you honestly what your move would involve.
