What Is DNS, in Plain English (and Why 'It's a DNS Thing' Is Not an Excuse)

DNS is the internet's phone book, and it quietly controls whether your website and email work. Here is what it is and what the records actually do, minus the jargon.

Sooner or later, something on your website or email breaks, you ask for help, and someone mutters "it's a DNS thing" in a tone that ends the conversation. Let us fix that, because DNS is not complicated once someone explains it like a human.

DNS is the internet's phone book

Every website and mail server actually lives at a string of numbers called an IP address. Nobody wants to memorize those, so DNS translates your friendly name, yourbusiness.com, into the right numbers behind the scenes. You type a web address, DNS quietly looks up where it really lives, and connects you. That is the whole job.

The handful of records that matter

You do not need to know all of them. Just these:

  • A record: points your domain at the computer running your website. It is the one that says "the site lives here."
  • MX record: points your email to the right mail server. Get this wrong and email stops arriving.
  • SPF, DKIM, and DMARC: the three security notes we keep mentioning. Together they prove that email claiming to be from you really is, so your messages land and scammers cannot impersonate your domain.
  • CNAME: a "use this other name instead" pointer, handy for things like linking up a subdomain.

That is honestly most of it. Five ideas, not a computer science degree.

Why it feels scary, and why it should not be

DNS has a reputation because a tiny typo in the wrong place can take your site or email down, and changes can take a little while to spread across the internet. So people treat it like a live wire. The truth is it is just a settings list. It only bites when it is handled carelessly.

How we make it a non-event

When you add hosting or email through Squish, we write all the right records for you, automatically and correctly, the first time. No copy-pasting cryptic strings, no typos, no nine-at-night panic. Want to check or change something yourself? Ask Faber in plain English and it handles it. Want a human to do it? That door is open too.

"It's a DNS thing" should be the start of a fix, not the end of the conversation. With us, it is.
