Do You Actually Need an AI Assistant for Your IT? A Grounded Take

Everyone is bolting AI onto everything. Here is an honest look at when an AI assistant genuinely helps with your IT, and when it is just a buzzword on a page.

"AI assistant" is on every product page right now, which is a good reason to be a little skeptical. So let us be honest about when one actually earns its keep for your business's tech, and when it is just decoration.

When it is genuinely useful

An AI assistant is worth having when it does real work you would otherwise wait on a human for, or slog through yourself:

  • Making a change fast: "point my domain at the new site," or "add a mailbox for the new hire."
  • Answering "how is my stuff actually set up?" without you digging through menus.
  • Handling the routine, so you only pull in a person for the genuinely tricky things.

That is not a gimmick. That is a faster way to run your own account, at any hour.

When it is just a buzzword

Be wary of "AI" that is really a search box with a personality, or a support bot whose main skill is stopping you from reaching a human. If the assistant cannot actually do anything, it is a mascot, not a tool.

The test

Ask one question: does it do things, or just talk about things? A useful assistant takes an action and reports back. A decorative one hands you an article and wishes you luck.

Our assistant, Faber, is built for the first kind. You can ask it to find a domain, add hosting, or set up forwarding, and it just does it, then hands you to a human whenever you want one. AI that acts, with a person always within reach. That is the version worth having.
